Walleye

Walleye are a prized table fish and a technical target, named for their large, light-reflective eyes that let them feed effectively in low light and murky water. That biology drives the whole game: walleye fishing in Utah centers on dawn, dusk, and overcast conditions, with fish holding shallow over rock and gravel during spawning windows and retreating deeper the rest of the time. A quick statewide note: live baitfish are illegal to use anywhere in Utah, so walleye rigs here are built around jigs, crankbaits, and frozen or dead bait rather than live minnows.

Walleye are a bottom fish with a light advantage. Their eyes carry a reflective layer that lets them see in conditions where their prey can't, so they feed hardest at the edges of the day and in water with color in it — and they feed close to the bottom, on structure, without chasing far. Everything in this kit follows from that. Get down to them, stay in contact so you can feel a bite you'll never see, and give the fish something it can find when the light is poor.

That's also why this one isn't tied to a water. The same three presentations work at Utah Lake in April, Yuba through the summer, and Starvation, Willard or Deer Creek any time the wind lays down. Walleye behave like walleye everywhere. Only the depth changes.

The two ball heads are the core, and they split the day between them. Run white while there's light in the water — it reads as the pale, silvery forage walleye are already eating, and it still gets found in the stain at Utah Lake and Yuba. Switch to black as the sun drops or after a blow muddies things up. Black isn't subtle; it's the hardest silhouette you can show a fish looking up at a bright surface, and contrast beats brightness once the light is gone. Both heads are round on purpose — they fall straight, add no action of their own, and hand the whole job to the plastic behind them. A quarter ounce is the weight that keeps you on the bottom when the wind bows your line.

The Gulp minnow in Black Shad goes on the black head, which is the same reasoning doubled, plus scent. A walleye takes a bait softly and holds it, and if it tastes right it holds a beat longer — that beat is your hookset. The 3" chartreuse grub fills the gap the other two colors leave. White works when there's light and clarity, black works when there's neither, and chartreuse holds an outline in the flat grey middle: the chop after a blow, an overcast afternoon, the green tint Utah Lake takes on in August. The tail kicks at any speed, so it works dragged, hopped, or barely moving at all, and it's cheap enough to burn through while you're covering water.

The Rapala is the kit's other gear entirely. Working the bottom is the right answer most of the day, but at dusk and through the spring, walleye push shallow and up off the floor, and a jig dragging bottom is no longer where they are. That's the Original Floating's window. Cast it along a rip-rap face and work it back with a twitch and a pause, or flatline it behind the boat around two miles an hour. Silver is the finish for clear water and good light, and because it floats, a pause climbs it over rock instead of burying it in one.

Fish the kit in that order. Start on the bottom with the white head. When you get bit, slow down and work that depth properly. When the light goes, either change to the black head or leave the bottom altogether and put the Rapala up where the fish have moved.

One thing before you go. Walleye are the best-eating fish in this state and the rules reflect it — limits and slot restrictions differ from water to water and change from year to year.
