Yuba Reservoir

Yuba Reservoir is a roughly 10,000-acre reservoir on the Sevier River in Juab County, tucked between the Nephi and Scipio exits on I-15 about 25 miles south of Nephi. It’s Utah’s best-known northern pike fishery — toothy ambush predators that hold tight to flooded brush and weed lines in the warm, shallow arms and hit a spinnerbait hard enough to rattle your rod tip — with strong walleye, wiper, and jumbo perch fishing right alongside them. Oasis and Painted Rocks both offer boat ramps and campgrounds, with a fish-cleaning station and modern restrooms at Oasis.

Mussel and shrimp are what we tie on at Yuba when we want a bite from whatever is down there. They're the two most consistent producers on this reservoir for wipers, they leak scent into stained water, and they get eaten by wipers and channel cats alike — which matters on a water where you rarely get to pick your species.

The two aren't interchangeable, and it's worth carrying both. Shrimp is the tougher of the two. It rides through a long soak and a few short taps without coming apart, so it's what we run when the rod goes in a holder and stays there. Mussel is softer and oilier, so it gives up scent faster and pulls fish in quicker, but it comes off the hook quicker too — better when the wipers are active and you're recasting anyway.

The rig is simple on purpose: a slip sinker above a barrel swivel, then a fluorocarbon leader down to a size 2 hook. The sliding sinker is the whole idea — a fish can pick the bait up and move off with it without feeling the weight, so it doesn't drop it before you get a chance to come tight. The swivel stops the sinker and keeps the leader from twisting. We run fluorocarbon on the business end because it takes abrasion better, it's harder for fish to see down there, and it's the piece we want to give first. Snags are the hard part of bottom fishing — hang up on a rock or a branch and the leader breaks before the swivel does, so you're retying a hook instead of rebuilding the whole rig.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0827/5089/8434/files/Wiper_a0133559-6262-4d80-9181-74240e0fdb24.avif?v=1788233481
