White Bass

White bass are one half of the wiper cross — the parent stock behind every hybrid the state puts in the water — and they carry the same aggression in a smaller package. They travel in tight schools that push baitfish in open water, which makes the fishing feast or famine: nothing for an hour, then a fish a cast the moment you find one. Utah Lake is our white bass water, and that schooling behavior is the whole game there. Cover water until you make contact, then stay on the school and keep a small jig or curl-tail grub in front of them for as long as it holds together.
