Scofield Tiger Muskie Kit
Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources put tiger muskie into Scofield in 2017 for one reason: the reservoir had too many Utah chub, and they needed something big enough to eat them. Every fish they stocked was sterile, so the population is exactly what the DWR puts in and nothing more — but the ones that make it grow fast, because there's more food in that water than there are mouths to eat it. That one fact should shape how you fish it. You're not trying to fool a muskie with something clever. You're trying to look like a chub.
The lures come in pairs on purpose. Each of the three families has one natural pattern and one attractor. Goby Magic, the Brown Trout Buoyant, and the Yellow Perch Husky Jerk are for clear water and high sun, when a fish gets a long look and needs to see something it recognizes. White, Gold/Red, and the Gold Husky Jerk are for chop, cloud, and stained water, when you have to be found before you can be eaten. Start loud to locate fish, then switch to the natural version for the ones that followed and wouldn't commit.
Rigging is simple. Run the snap swivel when you're on the spoons and the Rapalas — you'll cycle through colors and depths all day looking for the one they want, and the snap saves you retying every time while the barrel keeps the spoons from putting twist in your line. Take it off for the tube jig. A jig fishes best tied direct: the knot sits right at the nose, the bait falls the way it's supposed to, and there's no hardware hanging above it changing the drop.
Now the part that makes the biggest difference out there, and it isn't in the box. Tip your hooks with chub meat. A piece of chub on a jig or a spoon puts scent and taste on a bait that already has the right look, and it's what turns follows and short strikes into fish in the net. Frozen chub is usually on the shelf at your local Sportsman's Warehouse — pick some up on the way.
Tip both the jigs and the spoons, but treat them differently. On the tube jig you can be generous; the jig's job is to fall and sit, and a good chunk of chub on the hook only helps. On the spoons, go very light — a small sliver is all you want. The Buoyant works because of its wobble, and too much meat kills that action and turns a swimming bait into a piece of dragging metal. If the spoon stops thumping on the retrieve, you've overdone it. Trim it back and try again.
